In a landmark Australian premiere, the US Opening Series of 2014 Major League Baseball will launch at the Sydney Cricket Ground from 20-23 March.
Visiting US Major League teams, Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks, will go bat to bat with Team Australia on 20 and 21 March. On the weekend of March 22 and 23, the US teams will battle each other in a display of National League rivalry in the first the two games of the Opening Series.
Sydney’s iconic cricket ground is undergoing a dramatic 20-day transformation into a baseball field fit to accommodate the spectacle. The overhaul includes locker room makeovers, temporary seating and surface replacement.
Baseball was first brought to Australia by American gold miners working in Ballarat in the 1850s, who played for fun on their rest days. Throughout the history of US Major League Baseball, 31 Australians have crossed the white stripes to play in a big league game. There are currently over 80 Australian baseballers playing in Minor League Baseball in the USA.
Sydney hosted Australia’s first US Major League Baseball game in 1914 when the Chicago White Sox played a NSW side – Chicago won by 10 to 1. But this year’s Sydney matches mark the first time a competitive US baseball fixture will be held in Australia. The Opening Series signals the beginning of the Major Baseball League series and has only been played five times outside the United States, including three series in Japan.
Book your tickets now to soak up the amazing atmosphere of this historic event.
